The Communications Executive will work across day-to-day corporate and internal communications, building awareness of ITN strategy and enhancing reputation whilst managing all aspects of press and publicity for 5 News.
Responsibilities
5 News (50%)
- Promote the distinctiveness of 5 News content, personnel and brand to consumer and trade audiences, reflecting key messages;
- Work closely with 5 News senior management team and ITN’s head of press and public affairs to build awareness and manage the reputation of 5 News;
- Liaise with the 5 News team to identify potential stories and reports for external distribution, issuing programme exclusives and newslines to secure the widest possible media coverage;
- Write and distribute press releases and other press materials, signed off by 5 News management and Channel 5 Media Relations as appropriate;
- Propose ideas and secure pre-publicity tie-ups with newspapers and other media;
- Manage reactive press enquiries relating to 5 News, anticipating issues of controversy and handling crisis communications in conjunction with senior management;
- Seek profile opportunities and speaking slots for individual presenters, correspondents and reporters, briefing talent and management on messaging prior to engagements;
- Encourage media commentators to write positively about the role of our programmes in the wider news landscape;
- Oversee, co-ordinate and submit awards entries in liaison with the editorial team.
ITN Corporate Communications (50%)
- Assisting, co-ordinating and planning of internal & external communications and events in conjunction with the communications team;
- Daily maintenance of ITN intranet, including sourcing and publishing 2-3 news stories each day and working with section editors to make sure the site is up to date;
- Devising innovative ways of communicating with ITN staff and external audiences, making full use of range of multimedia platforms;
- Be the gatekeeper of an ITN annual communications calendar, making sure it is well maintained and that colleagues are kept updated on significant dates and deadlines;
- Building a network of effective and positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders at all levels;
- Primary editor of ITN’s group-level social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), building audience and promoting our programmes, people and reputation;
- Supporting the Corporate Communications team on long-term projects;
- Act as a brand guardian for ITN, proactively seeking to develop and improve marketing collateral and ensuring it is reflective of current branding guidelines.
Qualifications
- 2-3 years’ experience in a communications role
- Highly proactive and enthusiastic
- Confident communicator
- Highly developed written communication skills
- Ability to be both pre-emptive and reactive
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Excellent organisational and planning skills
- Experience of prioritising conflicting workloads and working within the confines of strict deadlines
- Strong computer skills including relevant software, such as MS Office and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products desirable (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), but training can be given
- Knowledge of Content Management Systems desirable
- Ability to interact and relate to all levels of staff and build strong relationships
- Ability to work well in a team, combined with a high degree of initiative
- The ability to work flexibly and under pressure in a demanding environment
